Our take on Driven Out
The defining mechanic is a checkpoint device that creates a copy after death but can itself be attacked and destroyed, turning checkpoint placement into a defensive decision.
What is Driven Out?
Driven Out is a 2D side-scrolling action game set in a retro-styled world of dangerous creatures and upheaval.
A farmer with no combat experience must study enemy behavior and respond to attacks with deliberate, skill-based actions. A magical device can create copies of her after death and lets her establish checkpoints wherever she chooses, provided it still has power. The device can be damaged or destroyed when enemies target it, especially when it is left unprotected. The world has no in-game loading screens, and encounters take place across a continuous environment. There is no character progression or loot system.
How Driven Out plays
- 01Custom checkpoints
- The magical device allows checkpoints to be established at chosen locations while it remains powered.
- 02Breakable checkpoint device
- Enemies may attack the checkpoint mechanism instead of the player, and it can be destroyed if left undefended.
- 03Enemy-reading combat
- Success depends on observing varied creatures and choosing responses to their attacks.
- 04No character progression
- The game excludes character advancement systems and loot.
- 05Continuous world
- The side-scrolling environment contains no in-game loading screens.
Driven Out compared to similar games
Driven Out centers on deliberate 2D combat, player-placed checkpoints, and a destructible checkpoint device, while Sundered: Eldritch Edition is described as a chaotic metroidvania with roguelite elements. The two listings therefore differ in combat structure and progression focus.
