ActionIs The Persistence worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Sci-fi horror fans who want stealth and combat aboard a hostile ship
- Roguelite players who want character upgrades to carry over after death
- Players seeking an optional second-player role controlling ship systems from a mobile device
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who want a fixed, predictable route may hit a wall when the ship’s decks periodically change configuration.
- VR players who rely on motion controls may be blocked at the control setup, since motion controls are unsupported.
- Players seeking a non-horror setting may not want to face the ship’s hostile creatures.
Our take on The Persistence
The clearest sticking point for VR players is the control setup: headsets are supported, but motion controls are not. Players expecting each expedition to follow a stable route may also find the periodically shifting deck layout disorienting.
What is The Persistence?
The Persistence is a sci-fi horror roguelite set aboard a deep-space colony ship overrun by hostile creatures.
As a clone of security officer Zimri Eder, players explore the ship, restore its systems and seek a route back to Earth. Its deck layout changes periodically, making expeditions different. Players can use stealth, cover and a personal shield to face enemies, gather DNA to improve abilities, and collect materials and schematics for weapon upgrades and suit customizations. When Zimri dies, a new clone carries forward upgraded stats, suits and weapon schematics. An asymmetric mode lets a second player use a phone or tablet to control ship systems, including doors and security defenses. VR headsets are supported, but motion controls are not.
How The Persistence plays
- 01Changing ship layout
- The deck configuration shifts periodically, altering the route through each expedition.
- 02Progress across deaths
- A replacement clone retains upgraded stats, suits and weapon schematics after Zimri dies.
- 03Second-player ship control
- A connected phone or tablet can control systems such as doors, creature lures and internal defenses.
- 04VR headset support
- Compatible headsets include Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and WMR, with motion controls unsupported.
