Our take on Dreadlands
The store presentation gives equal weight to campaign variety, co-op, and PvP, but does not clarify how much content each mode contains. Its broad world description also gives limited detail about campaign structure beyond the three factions.
What is Dreadlands?
Dreadlands is a turn-based tactical RPG set in a violent post-apocalyptic world where factions compete for Glow.
Players choose among three gangs, each with its own campaign and playstyle: the Scrappers, Tribe-kin, or Skarbacks. Battles use a free Action Point system for movement, attacks, and abilities, alongside morale contests that can break enemy resolve. In-match challenges award experience, with extra XP for the selected MVP. Tactics cards add powers that can alter combat. Campaigns support solo play and co-op, while PvP provides battles against other players. Exploration crosses grasslands, swamp-jungle areas, mountains, deserts, and contaminated zones, with hostile wildlife and local fighters creating additional threats.
How Dreadlands plays
- 01Three Factions
- The Scrappers, Tribe-kin, and Skarbacks each have separate campaigns and distinct playstyles.
- 02Flexible Action Points
- Action Points can be spent in different sequences for movement, attacks, and abilities during a turn.
- 03Morale Battles
- Combat includes a morale contest that can affect enemies without relying only on elimination.
- 04Experience Challenges
- Match objectives grant additional experience, including a further award for the chosen MVP.
- 05Tactics Cards
- Card-based powers can be combined to influence the course of a battle.
- 06Co-op And PvP
- Campaigns can be played with a friend, while PvP supports battles against other players.
Dreadlands compared to similar games
Dreadlands combines three faction campaigns with free-form Action Point combat, morale, experience challenges, and tactics cards, while Men of War: Assault Squad focuses on large-scale World War II battles with direct control over units. Shogun Showdown centers on positioning, attack tiles, deck building, and roguelike progression, whereas Dreadlands offers campaigns, co-op, and PvP. Xenonauts follows a Cold War-era military organization defending Earth from aliens with persistent soldiers, rather than Dreadlands' faction-based post-apocalyptic setting.
