Our take on Defect
The ship-building pitch emphasizes broad creative freedom, but the campaign repeatedly takes each completed ship away through crew defections. That recurring loss is central to the mission cycle, so construction is also about leaving weaknesses that can be exploited later.
What is Defect?
Defect alternates between ship construction and top-down 2D combat.
During construction, a power core sets the ship's size, and components such as weapons, hull, engines, crew, and shields can be placed, scaled, and rotated. The components follow game rules and physics, so designs can include weaknesses intended for later fights. Missions range from fighting waves of fighters to capturing stations and evacuating passengers.
After each mission, the crew defects with the ship, and the next mission pits the captain against that former crew. Campaign progress cycles through building and combat, with later ships and missions growing in scale. Challenge mode lets players upload ships and fight designs made by friends or the community; opponents are controlled by AI rather than direct multiplayer.
How Defect plays
- 01Ship construction
- A power core determines build size, while components can be repositioned, resized, and rotated.
- 02Mutiny cycle
- After a mission, the former crew returns in the ship they took, making earlier design choices relevant to later combat.
- 03Community ship fights
- Uploaded player designs appear as AI-controlled opponents in challenge missions.
- 04Mission variety
- Objectives include station capture, passenger evacuation, and disguising a ship to pass enemy shields.
