Our take on Darklands
The game gives up fixed class and level structure in favor of attribute and skill development. That choice offers flexible character growth but provides less predefined specialization for players who want roles established by the rules.
What is Darklands?
Lead a party of four adventurers across a mythical version of 15th-century Germany.
Travel by land and sea between more than ninety cities, reaching places from the Frisian Coast to Bohemia, the Alps, and Prussia. The journey includes city streets, mine shafts, robber-knight towers, and witch gatherings. Characters develop attributes and skills without fixed classes or levels. Learned alchemical formulas allow potion creation. Battles play out in real time, with the option to pause and issue new orders. The game uses watercolor-style graphics and includes a menu for role-playing choices. Extra materials include soundtrack files in MP3 and MIDI formats, a cluebook, a map, and an original reference card.

Darklands compared to similar games
Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition emphasizes an unconventional story, distinctive characters, and a strange, dangerous city, while Darklands centers on four adventurers traveling across 15th-century Germany, developing skills, crafting potions, and fighting in real time. Back to the Dawn focuses on investigating a maximum-security facility and breaking free, rather than Darklands' medieval fantasy journey across many cities.
