Our take on Dark Shores
Permanent death gives character survival a central role, but gives up the checkpoint reset found in many games. A death instead shifts the story to another character, so the narrative proceeds through losses rather than letting the same character restart.
What is Dark Shores?
A cruise carrying five young tourists crashes on a remote island in the South Pacific.
As they struggle to stay fed and sheltered, they discover that something on the island is hunting them. Dark Shores is a survival horror game built around permanent death: characters do not return to a checkpoint after dying. The story continues through another character, and its outcome depends on who lives and who dies. The game also uses an unscripted hunter to make the horror less linear and add unpredictability. Dark Shores is a game from LABS, a one-person studio.
How Dark Shores plays
- 01Permanent character death

- 02Branching narrative
- After one character dies, the story continues as another, and the outcome depends on who survives.
- 03Unscripted hunter
- The hunter is intended to bring unpredictability to the horror rather than relying only on planned jump scares.
