Our take on Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear
Rather than using a broad empire-building structure, this strategy game concentrates on selected World War II battles. Its short scenarios, computer-calculated line of sight, and point-buy option place tactical decisions and battle recreation ahead of long-term territorial expansion.
What is Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear?
A computer adaptation of a board wargame set on the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
Players command historical infantry, artillery, mechanized, and support units for Axis and Soviet forces. Unit ratings represent factors such as armor, speed, size, targeting, and crew training through a target-number system. The game includes ten original scenarios, eleven Frontier scenarios, five Commanding Heights scenarios, and a Partisan Road point-buy scenario. Many scenarios take about an hour, while the first can be learned in ten minutes. AI opponents, multiplayer with a forum and lobby, tutorials, a printed manual, and a scenario editor are included. Optional rules add persistent action points, fog of war, unit-quality variation, bunkers, ruined buildings, and altered line-of-sight calculations.
