StrategyIs Colony Prospector worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Players who enjoy repetitive exploration and reading, rather than story-heavy games.
- Fans of colony management who want colony outcomes to carry risks of failure.
- Players who like uncovering systems for themselves and accept a demanding challenge.
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fast-paced structure may find the repeated planetary scanning and colony setup slow.
- Those who want dependable progress may dislike the possibility of colony failures and a punishing challenge.
- Players looking for a detailed, directed story may find the focus on descriptive colony reports a poor match.
Our take on Colony Prospector
Rather than centering on a single settlement, the game makes repeated prospecting and the uncertain outcomes of many colonies its main loop. Colony decisions also feed into a wider faction struggle, while optional missions sit alongside that ongoing process.
What is Colony Prospector?
Colony Prospector combines planetary exploration with colony management.
Fly between planets, scan for habitability, resources, hazards, and secrets, then choose whether to establish a colony by sending down a pod. Colonies can fail, and their outcomes are recounted through descriptive text. Twenty colony types offer different bonuses, while successful missions unlock additional pods and stations. Crafting uses materials recovered from encounters, and gas-giant mining provides another activity. Colonies also affect a wider struggle among three rival races: Earth begins behind, and specialist colonies can support its growth or hinder its opponents. Optional missions include locating 20 statues. The game includes an Ironman mode, random encounters, and no cap on the number of colonies that can be established.
How Colony Prospector plays
- 01Planetary prospecting
- Scans reveal factors such as water, resources, native life, and environmental dangers that inform colonisation choices.
- 02Colony specialisations
- The 20 colony types provide different bonuses and can advance Earth or impede rival factions.
- 03Crafting from wreckage
- Materials recovered after space encounters can be used to make specialist pods.
- 04Optional objectives
- Missions include searching for 20 statues, but they are not required.
