We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Top-down shooter fans who want missions set in procedurally varied cities
- Zombie-action players who want objectives such as defense, boss fights, or rescues
- VR players who want a shooter that can also be played without a headset
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fixed campaign may find the mission structure's randomly generated settings and objectives a poor match.
- Players who want a story-focused experience may hit a wall when play centers on repeated combat missions and survival-mode kill counts.
- Players looking for multiplayer shooting with friends may not find that format here; survivor groups are described as part of missions.
Our take on City Z
Players who want a fixed sequence of carefully authored missions may bounce when a new game changes the scenery, objectives, date, and weather. The next likely sticking point is the survival mode, which centers on killing as many zombies as possible rather than a defined mission objective.
What is City Z?
City Z is a top-down shooter set after a virus has devastated society.
Play with or without a VR headset, taking on missions in randomly generated cities with changing objectives, scenery, dates, and weather. Tasks include clearing zombies, defending against an assault, defeating a boss, or rescuing and escorting people. Survivors encountered during missions may join or assist the player if trust is established. Their trust can be managed, and groups can share weapons, ammunition, and antidotes. Player attributes include stamina, resistance to the virus, and social skills. A separate survival mode challenges players to kill as many zombies as possible, with multiple difficulty levels and leaderboards.
How City Z plays
