Our take on Benign Land
Players looking for conventional objectives will hit the wall when they discover that exploration has no combat or puzzles to solve. The next bounce point comes with the symbolic narrative, which presents Ireland’s history and memory through metaphor rather than clear, sequential explanation.
What is Benign Land?
Benign Land is a brief walking game unfolding through 17 surreal vignettes tied to Ireland’s mythology, past, and shared remembrance.
Its route spans pre-Christian sacred places, Christianity’s emergence, the Irish Famine, and Northern Ireland’s Troubles. A circular structure carries players between chapters through passageways, while metaphor, signs, and visual suggestion shape an intentionally elusive story. Exploration is unhurried, with no fighting or puzzle-solving. The project began as an interactive installation in Belfast and lasts around 30–45 minutes. Music for the journey was composed by Belfast sound artist John D’Arcy.
