We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Action-adventure players who want a Japan-inspired setting with folklore elements
- Players who prefer stage-based campaigns over open-world exploration
- Players interested in switching between character abilities, racing, and air combat
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a single combat system may find the transformations, vehicle sections, and air-combat stages uneven in focus
- Players who prefer a small, tightly contained campaign may bounce off the more than 50-stage structure
- Players looking for a climbing puzzle game or meditative exploration may prefer Jusant
Our take on BAKERU
The likely bounce point arrives when the campaign shifts away from standard drum combat. Players who want one consistent action format may hit a wall at the transformation requirements, vehicle races, or aerial combat sections.
What is BAKERU?
Bakeru is an action adventure set in a fictional Japan that combines modern settings with elements from historical drama.
Bakeru travels across the country to oppose Oracle Saitaro and the Festival Troops, fighting spirits, enemies, and traps across more than 50 stages. His main weapon is a drum said to purify evil spirits. Henge Licenses let him assume the forms of figures such as Kintaro and Momotaro, each providing different skills. The game also includes stages built around vehicle racing and aerial combat. The Steam release adds the Hurricane attack, Spinning Top attack, their combined technique, and a Lantern Boss encounter.
How BAKERU plays
- 01Henge transformations
- Licenses allow Bakeru to take the form of heroes including Kintaro and Momotaro and use their abilities.
- 02Regional stage themes
- The campaign spans more than 50 levels based on Japanese prefectures, with distinct motifs for each area.
- 03Vehicle and air stages
- Some sections switch from standard platforming to vehicle races or airborne combat.
- 04Steam additions
- This release includes Hurricane, Spinning Top, a combined version of both attacks, and a Lantern Boss.
BAKERU compared to similar games
Bakeru uses stage-based action, transformations, and varied vehicle and air-combat sections, while Sundered: Eldritch Edition is a roguelite metroidvania. SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER focuses on runner gameplay with shooting, so it offers a narrower run-and-fire structure than Bakeru's multi-stage adventure.
