Our take on ATONE: Heart of the Elder Tree
The emphasis on story, puzzles, and rhythm combat leaves less room for conventional action-RPG systems. Combat is tied to musical timing, while decisions and puzzle failures can narrow later possibilities, making experimentation riskier than in a more forgiving adventure.
What is ATONE: Heart of the Elder Tree?
Take the role of Estra, a young warrior travelling across Midgard after her father’s death.
The game combines interactive storytelling, conversations, consequential choices, and puzzles that reveal secrets, abilities, and hidden routes. Decisions can alter Estra’s path, and some failures may remove possible answers. Combat uses rhythm-game mechanics inspired by Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, with sword-and-axe encounters set to individual songs. The setting draws on Nordic lore and depicts a realm affected by unknown forces after the Gods abandon it. Players can sometimes avoid fights, assist companions, or confront threats while deciding what to believe and how to act.
