Our take on Aloft
Rather than keeping survival anchored to a fixed shelter, Aloft makes the island itself mobile. Its central structure combines home building, sailing, resource production, and ecosystem restoration, while the stated design places more emphasis on positive actions than on punishing mistakes.
What is Aloft?
Aloft is a cooperative sandbox survival game set among floating islands.
Players can turn islands into flying homes, then use sails, rudders, windmills, cables, and pulleys to travel and automate production. Exploration provides resources, technology, ancient ruins, seeds, animals, and lost knowledge. Each island contains an ecosystem affected by gathering and fungal corruption. Combat against mushroom creatures, antidote crafting, and biodiversity restoration are used to recover damaged islands and access special resources. Players can cultivate crops, cook meals, care for animals, and craft tools. The game supports solo play or groups of up to 8, with island bases carried into other players’ worlds. An island creator allows custom designs to be shared with the community.
How Aloft plays
- 01Flying Island Homes
- Players can equip an island with sailing parts and convert it into a mobile base for exploring the skies.
- 02Ecosystem Restoration
- Antidotes, combat, and biodiversity work can reverse fungal damage and unlock special island resources.
- 03Production Automation
- Windmills, cables, and pulleys can operate machines and production systems.
- 04Animal Husbandry
- Animals brought home can provide rare resources after their needs are met.
- 05Shared Island Creation
- Custom islands can be made with the in-game creator and distributed to other players.
Aloft compared to similar games
Aloft combines cooperative survival crafting with mobile island construction, ecosystem restoration, sailing, farming, and animal care. Mr. Prepper focuses on preparing an underground shelter amid a nuclear-war threat and authoritarian government, while Unplagued centers on teams of up to 4 purging plague from procedurally generated medieval villages. Aloft supports solo play or groups of up to 8.
