Our take on 428: Shibuya Scramble
Rather than centering on one protagonist and a single route, this adventure interlocks five viewpoints and makes the player move between them. Its use of still photography and live-action footage also replaces the animated or fully rendered presentation common in many story-led games.
What is 428: Shibuya Scramble?
A kidnapping in Shibuya links the lives of a detective, journalist, former gang leader, pharmaceutical researcher, and a part-time worker in a cat costume.
The game combines still images with live-action footage as the story moves through downtown Tokyo. Five narratives unfold at the same time, with decisions made by one character affecting events involving others. The JUMP system lets players move between these storylines to trace their connections and respond to changing circumstances. Choices can produce disastrous results or amusing game overs, while more than 50 endings, bonus modes, and additional scenarios provide further paths through the city.
