Our take on Zengeon
The run-based structure creates variety by discarding pickup items after defeat. That loss makes each attempt a fresh build, but it also limits long-term retention of temporary equipment and rewards.
What is Zengeon?
Zengeon combines action RPG combat with roguelite runs in a colorful anime-inspired setting.
Players choose from six characters, each with distinct attacks, skills, and items, then enter the Blessed Land to fight demonic enemies and large bosses. Runs vary through changing stage layouts, enemy locations, and item pickups, creating different challenges on each attempt. Up to four players can play together, or one player can venture alone. Pickups are lost after defeat, while character-specific story items remain available after being unlocked. The story follows students of the Celestial Academy as they confront the Dark Emptiness and work to restore a broken seal.
How Zengeon plays
- 01Six playable characters
- Each character uses a distinct set of attacks, skills, and items.
- 02Variable roguelite runs
- Stages, enemy positions, and available pickups change between ventures.
- 03Four-player cooperation
- The game supports solo play or teams of up to four participants.
- 04Persistent story items
- Character-specific story items remain unlocked after a failed run.
Zengeon compared to similar games
Vagante also places action-oriented adventuring in a dark fantasy setting, while Zengeon centers on six selectable characters, changing runs, and cooperative play for up to four people. Dungeon Defenders: Awakened combines cooperative action RPG combat with tower defense and includes loot, leveling, pets, and character customization; Zengeon instead focuses on variable stages, enemy placements, and item pickups during roguelite ventures.
