Our take on Z
Players who need time to pause and plan may bounce off the real-time command loop, especially when capturing territory, managing factory output and responding to units that can refuse orders or flee.
What is Z?
Z is a real-time strategy war game focused on capturing territory and resources before the opposing force takes control.
Players direct six kinds of robot soldiers, vehicles and factory production across 20 levels on five planets, with terrain ranging from frozen regions to lava fields. Units can perform up to 40 actions and use weapons including rifles, machine guns and antitank launchers. Factories produce selected robots and vehicles, while installations provide manufacturing, radar and repairs. An in-game map and radar can be opened during play. More than 30 minutes of humorous movie sequences introduce and conclude levels. Voiceovers are available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, and the music changes with the battle.
How Z plays
- 01Robot unit variety
- Six robot soldier types have distinct personalities and may respond differently in combat.
- 02Vehicle control
- Command tanks, jeeps, repair vehicles, armored personnel carriers, field guns and missile launchers.
- 03Factory production
- Choose which robot and vehicle types factories manufacture after capturing production installations.
- 04Planetary battlefields
- The 20 levels span five planets with environments including Arctic regions, fire and lava.
- 05Multilingual voiceovers
- Movie and gameplay speech supports English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
- 06Dynamic battle music
- The music changes during play to reflect the current mood of the battle.
Z compared to similar games
Z centers on real-time warfare across 20 levels, with territory capture, factory production and direct control of robots and vehicles. Anomaly: Warzone Earth also combines action and strategy, but its description places the player in a reversed tower-defense structure against alien forces. Dungeon Defenders: Awakened combines cooperative action RPG play with tower defense, loot, leveling, pets and character customization rather than Z's robot-and-vehicle battlefield management.
