ActionIs Yuoni worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Horror players who want stealth and pursuit instead of combat
- Narrative-focused players interested in friendship, betrayal, and hidden secrets
- Players seeking a short-form horror structure with an alternate ending and harder replay
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players looking for weapon-based combat, since Ai has no defensive measures against enemies
- Players who prefer relaxed pacing, because survival depends on hiding, running, and remembering routes under threat
- Players seeking broad open-world exploration rather than a connected set of Japanese locations
Our take on Yuoni
Its defining constraint is that Ai cannot fight back: survival comes from hiding, holding her breath, exploiting enemy senses, and running when concealment fails.
What is Yuoni?
Play as 10-year-old Ai in a first-person horror story set across connected Japanese houses, schools, and hospitals trapped in endless dusk.
Survival depends on hiding, fleeing, and exploiting each spirit’s weakness, since Ai has no weapons or defensive tools. Blind enemies can be bypassed by holding the breath, while deaf enemies require a quick escape. Items gathered during exploration open routes out of the supernatural world, but repeating paths incorrectly can leave Ai trapped. The story follows friendship, betrayal, and secrets among Ai’s classmates. After completing the game, an additional ending becomes available, along with tougher enemies on a return journey.
How Yuoni plays
- 01Enemy-specific survival
- Different spirits require distinct tactics, including silent movement around blind foes and rapid dashes past deaf ones.
- 02Connected Japanese settings
- A traditional home, school, and hospital form one linked environment illuminated by perpetual twilight.
- 03Additional story path
- Finishing the game opens another ending and a replay with substantially more difficult enemies.
- 04Exploration item use
- Collected objects support escape while remembering explored routes remains necessary to avoid becoming trapped.
