Our take on Varney Lake
The vampire mystery sets up the story, while the described play centers on questioning characters, branching choices, illustrations, and puzzles. The supernatural premise frames an investigation rather than an action-focused experience, which may not suit players expecting direct confrontation.
What is Varney Lake?
Varney Lake follows three friends during a summer vacation and a paranormal investigator decades later.
Jimmy, Doug, and Christine spend their days making plans, playing games, and facing bullies before encountering a vampire. Lou Hill later investigates the case and questions the now 40-something Christine and Jimmy about what happened, including Doug’s fate. The game presents its mystery through a branching narrative with choices that shape the characters’ outcomes. Players encounter puzzles as the story unfolds. It is the second Pixel Pulps adventure, following Mothmen 1966, and uses graphics inspired by home computers and stories influenced by mid-20th-century pulp fiction.
