Our take on Xenomarine
The listing foregrounds extensive randomization and replay value, but the central experience is also defined by frequent early deaths and a restart-from-level-one default. The additional adventure mode changes that consequence, yet the presentation gives less emphasis to how strongly the two modes differ.
What is Xenomarine?
Xenomarine is a science-fiction horror roguelike about a space marine searching an alien-infested station.
Turn-based combat covers more than 120 alien species, with different damage types, status effects, traps, hacked defenses, and deployable equipment. Each run uses procedurally created levels, missions, and sound effects. Character development centers on items, weapon and armor improvements, and more than 70 skill levels rather than starting classes. Scrap can be used for crafting and equipment upgrades. The default roguelike mode permanently ends a run on death, while an adventure mode allows continuation. The Ascension Edition adds a storyline about the infestation and multidimensional technology, including a way to complete the game.
