Our take on Way of Defector
Rather than using a standard combat or empire-building structure, the game turns defection into a survival-focused board-game journey. Its central tension comes from hunger, surveillance, finding a broker, and making choices that shape an escape story grounded in real memoirs.
What is Way of Defector?
Way of Defector presents the escape of a North Korean defector traveling through China toward South Korea as a board game.
Players manage hunger, evade Public Security Officers, locate a broker, and reach the destination. Scenarios draw on real defectors' memoirs and offer different circumstances and abilities. Choices alter the developing escape story rather than following one fixed sequence. Characters have personal abilities shaped by their lives, which affect how they attempt the journey. Survival depends on keeping the character alive while avoiding surveillance and starvation. The game focuses on the stages of defection, from leaving North Korea to arrival in South Korea, through scenarios based on true stories and player-directed outcomes.
