Is Waxworks: Curse of the Ancestors worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Horror players who want time-traveling exploration across distinct historical settings
- Adventure fans who prefer collecting items and solving puzzles between fights
- RPG players who want stealth, ranged, and melee combat with skill progression
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a relaxed or forgiving adventure may find the lethal encounters and gory horror tone too severe
- Players looking for a single setting or short, linear campaign may not suit the five-period structure and exhibit-based progression
- Players who want a primarily social or dialogue-driven RPG may find the focus on puzzles, exploration, and combat too action-oriented
Our take on Waxworks: Curse of the Ancestors
Instead of keeping horror in one continuous setting, the game makes a wax museum the hub for journeys across four historical periods. Each exhibit functions as a self-contained danger zone, replacing a standard linear map with puzzle-gated excursions tied to the family curse.
What is Waxworks: Curse of the Ancestors?
Waxworks: Curse of the Ancestors is a survival horror game set around a family curse.
The protagonist uses a wax museum and Uncle Boris’s crystal ball to travel from the present into Ancient Egypt, medieval Transylvania, Victorian England, and an industrial mine. Each period contains items to collect, puzzles, dangerous encounters, and a villainous twin to defeat. Combat supports ranged, stealth, and melee approaches, while an RPG system lets the character improve skills and gain perks. Crafting, animated characters, voice work, and 3D environments accompany the exploration. After collecting four special artifacts, the protagonist travels back in time to confront Ixona and attempt to erase the curse.
