- Fantasy RPG fans who enjoy developing and equipping a squad
- Players who prefer turn-based battles with terrain and morale considerations
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking real-time combat rather than turn-based encounters
- Players wanting an open-ended structure instead of a defined 42-mission campaign
- Players looking for a primarily narrative RPG without squad management and battlefield tactics
Our take on Warbanners
The focus on squad preparation and turn-based battlefield control gives up immediacy: battles depend on planning, positioning, and several interacting conditions rather than rapid real-time action. The defined campaign structure also leaves less room for an open-ended format.
What is Warbanners?
Warbanners is a turn-based tactical strategy game with role-playing elements.
Players manage a mercenary squad across a 42-mission story campaign, recruiting soldiers, equipping them, improving their combat abilities, and teaching them new skills. Assistants provide bonuses and options without joining battles, including effects involving catapults, poison, and morale. Battles account for terrain shape, lighting, unit field of view, morale, and fatigue. The environment can also be altered by freezing rivers, cutting or burning trees, digging trenches, and building bridges or barricades. Difficulty settings range from a beginner level to a nightmarish challenge for experienced tacticians.

Warbanners compared to similar games
Warbanners combines turn-based tactical battles with mercenary recruitment, equipment, squad development, and terrain alteration across a 42-mission campaign. Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based combat, but centers on positioning, attack-tile upgrades, skill collection, deck building, and a roguelike structure. The two games differ between squad management and a run-based deckbuilding system.
