Rather than centering on a fixed pilot role and a straightforward spacefaring campaign, the game treats the galaxy as a sandbox of occupations, faction relationships, storms, hidden locations, and monstrous encounters. Its Lovecraftian hazards replace calmer exploration conventions associated with space adventure.
What is Underspace?
Underspace is an open-world sandbox RPG set in a Lovecraftian galaxy of handcrafted star systems.
Players can mine resources, trade cargo, raid trains, explore lost stellar cities, or hunt creatures emerging from violent storms. The game includes 16 main campaign missions, 60 sidequests, 36 bosses, 114 star systems, 204 stations, and 533 equipment pieces for ship customization. Players can select a race and pursue different roles, while more than 40 factions have their own alliances, goals, and preferences. Player housing, cockpit customization, online multiplayer, and integrated mod support are included. Travel uses open-world routes and lanelines rather than fast travel. The main quest takes around 12–15 hours, while completionist play is listed at around 300 hours.
