We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Groups of five friends who want to play a multiplayer horror game together
- Horror fans who want to alternate between survivor and monster roles
- VR players who want to play as survivors in matches that also include non-VR players
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a solo game, since the stated match structure requires five players.
- Players who prefer fixed item locations, because keys and other items change position between rounds.
- Players expecting consistently available public matchmaking, as the vendor notes that low player numbers can make finding a server difficult.
Our take on Under Lock
The store text emphasizes changing item locations and different monster powers, while the fixed five-player format remains central. Its warning about low player numbers is also important: public matchmaking may be difficult without a group of friends.
What is Under Lock?
Under Lock is an asymmetrical horror game for five players: one controls a monster and four play survivors.
Survivors search buildings for keys that can open an escape route or provide access to other useful items, while the monster hunts them. Key and item locations are randomized between rounds on the same level. The available monsters use different powers and hunting methods. Flatface cannot move while being watched, Wheeper cannot directly see survivors but can detect and track them, and Shady remains invisible until gaining enough strength.
The monster first frightens survivors to build power before unlocking additional abilities and the ability to devour a victim. VR survivors can join the same server as players using non-VR play. The vendor notes that low player numbers can make finding a server difficult.
How Under Lock plays
- 01Asymmetrical player roles
- Each match has one monster hunting four survivors who search for keys and an exit.
- 02Distinct monster abilities
- Flatface, Wheeper, and Shady use different powers and have different limitations while hunting.
- 03Random item locations
- Keys and other items can appear in different places on the same level from round to round.
- 04Shared VR servers
- VR survivors can play on the same server as players using non-VR play.
