Our take on ToyCar
The focus on compact races and optional weapons leaves little room for a broader racing simulation or a campaign structure. The temperature mechanic also asks players to interrupt acceleration to manage boost, rather than relying on speed alone.
What is ToyCar?
ToyCar is a small-car racing game with single-player races against AI and online multiplayer.
Up to 8 players can race together, and online lobbies can include AI cars to fill the grid. Boost provides extra speed, but raises engine temperature, so racers need to ease off the throttle to cool down. Optional weapons add rockets that can apply random effects, including reduced gravity, lost power, reverse, continuous throttle, or steering problems. Some pickups are trapped and can cause the player’s car to explode. Tracks include farmland, tropical, winter, Italian-inspired, and Japanese settings. Options include car color selection and volume adjustment; the game starts at 50% volume.
How ToyCar plays
- 01AI-filled online races
- Online hosts can add computer-controlled cars to the grid alongside human racers.
- 02Temperature-managed boost
- Using boost heats the engine, requiring a break from acceleration to cool it.
- 03Optional rocket weapons
- Rockets can impose random driving effects, while some pickups are trapped.
- 04Lobby code sharing
- Hosts can share a code so people outside their friends list can join.
- 05Car color options
- The options menu lets racers choose a car color.
- 06Volume adjustment
- The game starts at 50% volume, which can be changed in the options.
