Our take on Torn Away
Rather than following one familiar adventure format, the game shifts between adventure stages, side-scrolling stealth, first-person cinematic sequences, and mini-games. Its wartime story is filtered through a child’s perspective, replacing conventional heroics with a journey shaped by displacement, danger, and family separation.
What is Torn Away?
Torn Away follows Asya, a girl separated from her home during wartime, as she travels across Germany and Poland to reunite with her family.
Its structure combines adventure-game stages, side-scrolling platforming with stealth, first-person cinematic sequences, and mini-games. Players hide from soldiers, deal with obstacles and severe weather, and experience events from Asya’s perspective. The story draws on diaries by Soviet children and addresses the fate of people forcibly deported from Eastern Europe to Nazi labor camps. The visual style combines socialist realism with modern French animation, while 3D environments are presented in a 2D-art style. An original soundtrack takes inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki’s films, French New Wave cinema, and experimental electronic music.
