Our take on To Ash
Rather than rewarding a journey with steadily increasing strength, this RPG begins with an experienced hero and makes decline its central progression. Its alternative mode also removes combat entirely, leaving puzzles, exploration, and story as the main structure.
What is To Ash?
To Ash is a turn-based RPG about Demitri, a hero whose abilities decline instead of improving through the game.
Battles use a Stance mechanic for changing the character’s strengths and responding to enemy attacks, with strategic combat from the beginning and no level grinding. The story focuses on death, loss, and acceptance, while towns reflect the five stages of grief. Players can choose between the full RPG experience, which includes combat and lasts 6-10 hours, or Adventure Mode, which removes combat and strategy while retaining the story, puzzles, and exploration for 3-5 hours. Choices lead to 2 possible endings.
How To Ash plays
- 01Declining Hero
- Demitri begins the journey as an experienced hero but becomes weaker as it continues.

- 03Two Play Modes
- The full RPG takes 6-10 hours, while Adventure Mode takes 3-5 hours without combat or strategy.
- 04Choice-Based Endings
- Player decisions determine which of 2 endings is reached.
- 05Grief-Themed Setting
- Towns are modeled on the five stages of grief within a story centered on mortality and acceptance.
