StrategyIs The Sandbox worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Creative players who want open-ended pixel-world building
- Puzzle fans who want 250 campaign levels across 15 themes
- Tinkerers who enjoy circuits, vehicles, music, creatures, and physics experiments
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a conventional combat campaign may bounce off the construction and physics sandbox before finding sustained action.
- Players who dislike experimentation may hit a wall when combining elements to discover reactions, machines, and world behaviors.
- Players wanting a realistic visual style may reject the retro 8-bit interface and 2D pixel-block presentation.
Our take on The Sandbox
The bounce point arrives when creation shifts from placing objects to combining systems. Players who do not enjoy testing physics, circuits, creatures, and chain reactions may lose interest before the open-ended tools become the main attraction.
What is The Sandbox?
Build and experiment in 2D worlds made from more than 200 interactive elements, including water, lava, electricity, vehicles, animals, humans, robots, and explosives.
The game combines free creation with 15 campaigns containing 250 puzzle levels. Worlds can include pixel art, chiptune music, circuits, sensors, conveyors, lasers, pipes, contraptions, and controllable characters. The PC version provides four times the creation space of the mobile version, with all elements available immediately. Mouse, trackpad, touch-screen, and keyboard-shortcut controls support construction. Progress can sync across PCs through Steam Cloud, and worlds can be viewed between PC and mobile versions. Creations can also be shared and browsed through the Online Gallery.
