What is The Message from Deep Space?
In a 1973 scenario, a meteorite reaches Earth and emits radio waves.
Players take the role of the mission’s Translator, working with scientists to interpret transmissions and compose replies. Correct responses prompt further messages, gradually revealing patterns, vocabulary, syntax, and meaning. The process uses mathematics and science as reference points and includes a player-managed dictionary. A retro computer provides the interface, while radio transmissions are built by frequency. A linguist, computer programmer, and astronomer respond to actions taken during the mission. The game includes over 30 hours of gameplay and a soundtrack lasting more than 30 minutes. Its premise draws inspiration from the Golden Record carried by the Voyager I space probe.
