Our take on THE ILLUSION
Rather than framing puzzles as optional diversions during exploration, the game makes them the route to cult acceptance and continued survival. The pressure comes from mistakes costing Martin part of his life, tying puzzle-solving directly to the story’s threat.
What is THE ILLUSION?
THE ILLUSION is a puzzle adventure set in a mysterious mansion surrounded by dark forces.
Martin arrives at the home of Zorya, the daughter of the sun, after searching for her cult and following clues to the mansion. To seek acceptance into the cult, he must solve its puzzles, which test memory, senses, reasoning, and interaction with the environment. Mistakes cost Martin part of his life, and the threat of death hangs over his attempt to progress. Puzzles also stand between him and the keys needed to open the next door, so choices such as touching a safe require care. The game follows Martin’s effort to survive the mansion while deciding whether he can pass Zorya’s tests.
How THE ILLUSION plays
- 01Mistake penalties
- Incorrect actions reduce Martin’s remaining life as he attempts to progress through the mansion.
- 02Puzzle-gated doors
- Solving challenges can provide the key needed to reach the next area.
- 03Environmental tests
- Challenges draw on memory, the senses, and interactions with objects and surroundings.
