Our take on Deluded Mind
Rather than treating puzzles as pauses in a horror story, the game connects their pace and solutions to Dean’s hallucinogen experience. Its asylum setting also blurs the line between the environment and his perception.
What is Deluded Mind?
Deluded Mind centers on Dean Catrall, an FBI agent whose daughter was killed by a criminal group seeking revenge.
He continues working and is abducted during an operation. When he comes to in Hillstone Asylum, he has been given a hallucinogen; a note from his captor reveals that his FBI partner, Robert Page, is there too. Dean must make his way through the asylum and question what is real and what is a hallucination. The game pairs a horror narrative with puzzles: taking too long to solve one, or getting it wrong, worsens the drug’s effects. Randomly generated events change what occurs from one playthrough to another, while the asylum’s corridors and Dean’s altered perception shape the challenge.
How Deluded Mind plays
- 01Puzzle penalties
- Taking longer to solve a puzzle or giving a wrong solution makes the hallucinogen’s effects more severe.
- 02Random events
- Generated events vary what occurs during a playthrough.
- 03Hallucinatory setting
- The drug distorts Dean’s experience as he searches the asylum for his partner.
