Our take on Taoism
Players who need a clearly fixed route may hit a wall when each run opens in a new direction and presents different road choices. Those who prefer straightforward card combat may also find the shifting Yin-Yang values and deck-building system a sticking point.
What is Taoism?
Taoism: The Card Game is a roguelike card game set in Luo Nan, a kingdom troubled by a plague and the spirits it creates.
Players take on different roles, explore the mist-covered land, and investigate the kingdom’s decline. Its card combat uses a circular field based on the Eight Trigrams, with Yin and Yang interactions shaping attacks. The Huayuan system can change those values during battle. Along different routes, players encounter enemies, bosses, choices, special equipment, and incidents.
A store offers cards and gear in exchange. Players expand their decks as they travel, facing opponents with their own card decks and spells. Each run begins with a new direction to explore, while cards and tokens contribute to the protagonist’s story and the mystery beneath Luo Nan’s capital.
How Taoism plays
- 01Yin-Yang Combat
- The Huayuan mechanic shifts Yin and Yang values during fights, changing the state of combat.
- 02Route-Based Exploration
- Each run starts with a new path, with choices and encounters appearing along the way.
- 03Card and Gear Store
- A shop along the route lets players trade for additional cards and equipment.
- 04Story Tokens
- Cards paired with tokens reveal pieces of the protagonist’s story as the mystery unfolds.
