Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a consistently triumphant journey may find the frequent possibility of captain deaths and harsh survival pressures a poor match.
- Players who want combat to dominate the experience may find the emphasis on stories, exploration, trade, and resource management too broad.
- Players looking for a short, tightly linear story may not want a game built around exploring four regions and intersecting stories.
Our take on Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition
Many role-playing games center on one protagonist’s continuing journey. Here, a captain’s death can end that run while leaving an inheritance for the next, making succession part of the structure rather than a simple failure state.
What is Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition?
Sunless Skies is a Gothic horror role-playing game about exploring a strange Victorian cosmos aboard a steam locomotive.
Captain a crew, trade goods or smuggle souls, and balance fuel and supplies against journeys for knowledge and riches. Real-time combat pits the locomotive against rival ships and celestial creatures; its equipment can be maintained, upgraded, crafted, or replaced. Officers have individual quests, while a captain’s history develops through choices made during advancement.
Captains may die, leaving consequences and an inheritance for those who follow, or players can reload the most recent captain. The game combines survival pressures, including morale, starvation, madness, and terror, with branching stories across four regions. Sovereign Edition includes added content, a reworked region, Full Steam mode, and other changes.
