ActionIs Subterrain worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Survival-game players who want several bodily needs and environmental systems to manage
- Solo sci-fi players who prefer crafting, research, combat, and exploration in one campaign
- Exploration-focused players who enjoy combining procedural areas with handcrafted locations and non-linear story material
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a relaxed pace may find the constant hunger, thirst, injury, infection, and environmental management demanding
- Players wanting a tightly linear campaign may not enjoy freely choosing colony districts and navigating randomly generated sub-levels
- Players looking for multiplayer play are not the target of this single-character survival setup
Our take on Subterrain
The store framing leads with a vast Mars open world, but the experience also depends on repeated survival management, resource processing, and procedurally generated sub-levels. That combination makes the game’s scope feel less like a broad sightseeing sandbox and more like a systems-heavy struggle inside a damaged colony.
What is Subterrain?
Subterrain is a single-player science-fiction survival game set in an underground Mars colony.
Dr. West must manage hunger, thirst, exhaustion, oxygen, temperature, injuries, and infection while searching the colony for supplies and clues. Combat includes melee and ranged weapons, modular weapon customization, evolving enemies, and generator defense during invasions. Resources and creature parts can be processed into components, armor, firearms, grenades, upgrades, survival equipment, and performance enhancers. Research produces improved item versions, while the biosphere and mine provide plants and ores for refinement. Exploration combines freely accessible colony districts, randomly generated sub-levels, handcrafted locations, non-linear story material, and repairs to habitat systems.
How Subterrain plays
- 01Survival management
- The character must monitor hunger, thirst, fatigue, oxygen, temperature, wounds, and infection during play.
- 02Modular weapon crafting
- Collected materials can be used to make firearms and alter ranged weapons with interchangeable parts.
- 03Evolving enemies
- Hostile creatures develop from cocoons into larger forms as the infection spreads.
- 04Colony exploration
- The Mars settlement includes open districts, authored locations, and procedurally created sub-levels.
- 05Research and fabrication
- Research, 3D printers, a Bio Combiner, and resource processing support equipment and item production.
- 06Community localization
- Editable localization files and community-made translations are supported, with translations potentially lagging behind English.
