We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Survival-game players who want building, crafting, and exploration in changing environments
- Players who enjoy gathering resources and researching technologies before expanding their equipment
- Science-fiction adventure fans who want environmental story details alongside sandbox play
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a tightly directed campaign may find the randomly generated sandbox structure too open-ended.
- Players who want consistently safe exploration may dislike creatures that become more active at night.
- Players looking for a primarily story-driven experience may find construction, resource gathering, and crafting take substantial focus.
Our take on Darkout
The sandbox structure trades a tightly controlled pace for player-led survival. Exploration, gathering, construction, research, and combat compete for attention, while darkness restricts when the world can be explored with only limited periods of security.
What is Darkout?
Darkout places players on Illuna after a crash, where procedurally generated biomes, persistent clouds, and hostile creatures shape survival.
The sandbox supports shelter construction, mining, gathering, looting, crafting, and research. Resources and materials can become weapons, armor, technology, furniture, and other devices. Creatures sensitive to light become more active at night, while twilight provides limited periods for exploration, rebuilding, and collecting resources. Logs left behind by others and by long-extinct natives reveal parts of Illuna’s history and the events preceding its continuing disorder. The game combines survival activities with a story for players who want more than exploration, crafting, and construction.
