Is Starminer worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Space simulation fans who want to design and operate a fleet
- Players who enjoy balancing resource use against ship size and power
- Players seeking asteroid mining alongside mercenary missions and fleet defense
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players looking for a focused campaign rather than a sandbox built around mining, construction, and fleet management
- Players who prefer low-pressure play may find that expansion can bring alien attacks
- Players seeking ground-based exploration or combat
Our take on Starminer
The focus on fleet construction and resource management leaves less room for a story-led campaign. Expansion also carries a trade-off: mining and building raise the heat signature, bringing alien detection into the loop.
What is Starminer?
Starminer is a space simulation sandbox focused on building and operating a fleet.
Pilot ships between asteroids using simulated physics, mine and process materials, and use them for profit or to maintain and expand a mercenary fleet. Missions for sector clients provide another source of income. Ship and station construction involves balancing materials, power, tonnage, and size, with a choice between smaller vessels and larger, heavily armed builds. Research provides new modules and tools, while link gates open access to other sectors. Mining and construction raise a heat signature; when it becomes high enough, aliens can detect the fleet. Defense systems and player-designed ships protect it.
How Starminer plays
- 01Fleet construction
- Ship designs balance material needs, power, tonnage, and size, from smaller vessels to large armed stations.
- 02Asteroid processing
- Mined materials can be processed for profit or used to maintain and expand the mercenary fleet.
- 03Heat-based threats
- Mining and building increase the fleet's heat signature, which can draw alien attention.
- 04Sector access
- Research provides new modules and tools, while link gates lead to additional sectors.
Starminer compared to similar games
Starminer centers on constructing and defending a fleet through asteroid mining, module research, and sector expansion. SpaceBourne 2 instead combines mining and trading with piracy, crafting, exploration, role-playing, and third-person shooting in an open-universe RPG.
