Is StarMade worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Space sandbox fans who want to build ships, stations, and factories
- Players who prefer open-ended exploration and self-directed objectives
- Groups seeking configurable community multiplayer with dedicated servers
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a tightly directed story or fixed sequence of missions may find the open sandbox structure too loose.
- Players who want short, focused sessions may find construction, trading, factories, and exploration too expansive.
- Players seeking a conventional single-player RPG rather than a building and systems sandbox may prefer another format.
Our take on StarMade
The trade-off is breadth over direction: construction, logistics, exploration, combat, and multiplayer configuration share the same game space, so the experience gives up a tightly authored path in favor of player-defined projects and systems.
What is StarMade?
StarMade is a voxel-based 3D space sandbox focused on construction, exploration, combat, trade, and resource production.
Players can create ships, space stations, bases, warp gates, factories, and custom weapon systems. Its procedurally generated universe contains quadrillions of galaxies, with single-player and multiplayer worlds configurable through extensive settings. Combat includes pirates, opposing factions, and fleet battles, while modular weapons support different configurations. Rail and logic systems can operate moving parts, weapons, lights, and explosives, including wireless connections and basic gates such as AND, OR, NOT, DELAY, and Flip-Flop. Community multiplayer runs on dedicated servers with administrator-configurable mechanics.
How StarMade plays
- 01Procedural universe
- The game generates quadrillions of galaxies across a universe that the vendor estimates would take approximately 10,000 years to cross.
- 02Ship construction tools
- Building functions include copying, pasting, undoing, redoing, replacing, symmetry modes, shape assistance, and template rotation.
- 03Modular weapon systems
- Weapon components can be combined into configurations ranging from sniper beams to swarm missiles.
- 04Rail and logic systems
- Rails can operate moving structures, while logic controls devices through gates, timers, switches, wireless links, and in-flight controls.
- 05Dedicated multiplayer
- Community servers let administrators adjust core mechanics and performance-related settings.
- 06Cross-platform support
- The game supports Windows, Linux, and Mac.
StarMade compared to similar games
SpaceBourne 2 is also a space-focused RPG, but it centers on single-player third-person shooting alongside mining, trading, piracy, crafting, and exploration. StarMade instead emphasizes voxel construction, configurable multiplayer, factories, logic systems, and player-built ships and stations.
