Our take on sphereFACE
Rather than placing a ship in open space or a flat arena, the game turns each sphere's inner surface into the playfield. Its movement model makes orientation and inertia central to shooting, while portals connect generated spaces instead of conventional level stages.
What is sphereFACE?
sphereFACE is a retro-styled 3D vector shooter set on the inside surfaces of spheres.
Players destroy asteroids to open portals, then travel through procedurally generated space while tracking the disturbance that awakened them. Flight uses inertial movement, with free-looking controls available through mouse, keyboard, controller, or VR headset. The single-save roguelike structure includes permadeath, exploration, progression, discovery, and a dark science-fiction story. Weapons include spread guns, gauss rifles, guided rockets, mines, flamethrowers, and a singularity cannon, while powerups, asteroid-based armour, and movement devices expand combat options. The game also includes an arcade high-score table, configurable controls, custom themes, and simultaneous Windows, Linux, and macOS updates.
How sphereFACE plays
- 01Spherical flight
- Inertial movement around the inside of each sphere makes navigation depend on agility, awareness, and reflexes.
- 02Procedural exploration
- Destroying asteroids opens portal routes through generated three-dimensional space.
- 03Permadeath structure
- A single-save roguelike format combines exploration, progression, discovery, and permanent character loss.
- 04Weapon upgrades
- Weapon choices include spread guns, gauss rifles, guided rockets, mines, flamethrowers, and a singularity cannon.
- 05Control customization
- Inputs can be assigned to keys, mouse buttons, gamepad controls, joystick axes, or a foot pedal.
- 06Custom themes
- Players can create and share alternate visual appearances for the game.
sphereFACE compared to similar games
sphereFACE combines arcade shooting with spherical inertial flight, procedural exploration, weapon upgrades, and permadeath. LUFTRAUSERS is also an arcade shooter, but its description centers on aerial battles and over 125 combinations of weapons, bodies, and propulsion systems rather than spherical exploration. Zero Caliber VR and Contractors focus on VR campaigns, cooperative or competitive multiplayer, while sphereFACE is described around single-save play.
