Our take on Spartan
Rather than centering play on rapid battlefield control, Spartan places empire building first. Diplomacy, trade, research, and war share the main structure, while turn-based pacing gives strategic decisions more space than a real-time battle format.
What is Spartan?
Spartan is a turn-based empire-building strategy game set in ancient Greece.
Players guide Sparta amid competition from other Greek cities and the Persian Empire, developing their empire through diplomacy, trade, research, and war. Battles receive less attention than in real-time strategy games, and the turn-based format allows time to consider choices. The game includes three tutorial scenarios, a manual prepared for printing, and TCP/IP multiplayer support. It can also use scenarios and campaigns from Gates of Troy, with content from both titles playable through that game’s engine.
How Spartan plays
- 01Empire Development
- Expansion combines diplomatic relations, commerce, scientific progress, and military action.
- 02Ancient Greek Setting
- The campaign centers on Sparta, rival Greek powers, and the Persian Empire.
- 03Tutorial Scenarios
- Three introductory scenarios are included for learning the game.
- 04Multiplayer Support
- TCP/IP support enables multiplayer games.
- 05Gates Of Troy Content
- Scenarios and campaigns from both games can be used with the Gates of Troy engine.
Spartan compared to similar games
Men of War: Assault Squad focuses on World War II, large-scale strategy, and direct control during combat, while Spartan centers on empire development through diplomacy, trade, research, and war. Xenonauts follows a Cold War-era alien-defense structure with persistent soldiers, small squads, and technology recovery; Spartan instead uses an ancient Greek empire-building framework.
