Our take on Smithy
Players who want authored cavern layouts may hit a wall when they encounter the procedural generation; the route is not presented as a fixed sequence of handcrafted stages. The description also centers on fighting and upgrading, so players expecting a story-driven progression may lose interest once that loop becomes clear.
What is Smithy?
Play as Smithy, an underground rodent who makes weapons.
Blast through procedurally generated caverns with different weapons, facing enemies as the tunnels lead deeper. Destroy obstacles and enemies to collect gold, and search for hidden treasures. Use the gold and treasure to purchase weapons and upgrades. The game’s loop centers on moving through caverns, fighting, and gathering resources for further purchases and upgrades. Controls and resolution can be changed by holding Shift when launching the game.
How Smithy plays
- 01Procedural Caverns
- The caverns are generated procedurally as Smithy burrows deeper.
- 02Weapon Upgrades
- Gold and hidden treasures can be used to buy weapons and improve them.
- 03Enemy Encounters
- New enemies appear as the route continues farther underground.
Smithy compared to similar games
Smithy centers on shooting through procedurally generated caverns and spending collected gold and treasure on weapons and upgrades. SUPER CHICKEN JUMPER is described as a runner with shooting, while Sundered®: Eldritch Edition is a metroidvania; Jusant instead focuses on climbing and puzzle challenges.
