Is Skies above the Great War worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- World War I aviation fans who want both strategic command and hands-on flying
- Strategy players who want persistent real-time air-force management
- Players who prefer choosing between manual control and AI delegation
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a purely hands-off grand-strategy game may find direct aircraft control and pilot management too involved.
- Players looking for a focused flight simulator may find the airfield, squadron, production, and personnel systems distracting.
- Players seeking cooperative or competitive multiplayer air combat are not the stated audience.
Our take on Skies above the Great War
Instead of separating strategic command from flight action, the game lets air-force management and aircraft control occur within the same real-time setting. A player can organize squadrons and production, then assume control of an individual plane during a mission.
What is Skies above the Great War?
This real-time blend of aerial combat and strategic command takes place over the Western Front in World War I.
Choose the Allied or German side, supply bases with aircraft and aviators, then assign squadrons to scouting, sector patrols, bombing runs, or balloon attacks. Companies including Fokker and Sopwith build planes and research updated designs as opposing technology progresses. Each pilot has a portrait and personal aptitude that improves through training and placement. A 10,000-square-kilometer theater and its aircraft operate continuously, with detailed damage during aerial engagements. Command can remain at the strategic level, or the player can fly an aircraft directly. Optional AI assistance handles selected responsibilities.
