Players recruit and move Roman armies, provide supplies, and conquer ancient Gaul while seasons change. Battles include legionnaires, scorpion artillery, and Germanic cavalry, with hundreds of individual soldiers involved. Combat can be slowed or paused for issuing orders, and parts of an army can be assigned to the AI. On the campaign map, players choose whether to make peace with Gallic villages or plunder them, affecting resistance. Different starting conditions and difficulty levels support repeated campaigns. Battles may be fought directly or watched with the army delegated to the AI.
