Our take on Shadows Over Loathing
Skipping battles shifts attention toward exploration, puzzles, and comedy, but reduces the role of combat in a playthrough. The stick-figure art and slapstick tone also make the game a poor match for players seeking realism or a serious atmosphere.
What is Shadows Over Loathing?
After Uncle Murray disappears from his antique shop in Ocean City, the investigation into his disappearance and collected artifacts reveals plots threatening the world.
This single-player adventure-RPG is set in the Prohibition-era Loathing universe and uses black-and-white stick-figure art. Its open world contains locations, quests, puzzles, items, friends, foes, and familiars. Players can take on the roles of the athletic Pig Skinner, cunning Cheese Wizard, or inscrutable Jazz Agent. Combat uses turn-based strategy but can be skipped. Other activities and encounters include fishing, cursed antiques, a government to overthrow, a time-travel side quest from the player’s future self, talking frogs, sentient math, and pettable cats.
