Is SGS Overlord worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- WW2 strategy players who want a campaign set specifically in Normandy
- Two players interested in commanding opposing German and Allied forces
- Wargamers who prefer operational units, supply, terrain, and weather over small-unit control
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking fast battles rather than a campaign where three-day turns and positional warfare shape the pace
- Players who want equal difficulty between sides, since the Allies are identified as the hardest side to play
- Players looking for a small-squad tactical game with direct control of individual soldiers
Our take on SGS Overlord
The defining structure is its three-day-turn campaign scale: players manage the Normandy operation from D-Day through the end of August rather than isolated battlefield encounters.
What is SGS Overlord?
SGS Overlord is a two-player World War II strategy game covering the Normandy campaign from June 6 to September 3, 1944.
Players command either German forces defending the front or Allied forces seeking to secure beachheads, capture key points, obtain port access, and break out toward Paris. The game uses three-day turns and includes a 30-turn grand campaign, a 22-turn Bocage scenario, a 7-turn Race for Cherbourg scenario, and a 15-turn Operation Cobra scenario. Land units operate at brigade or divisional scale, while air and naval support appear as Allied groups. Fortifications, supply wagons, depots, terrain, and weather affect operations.
How SGS Overlord plays
- 01Normandy Campaign
- The main campaign runs from June 6 through September 3, 1944, covering the operation's full stated duration.
- 02Four Scenarios
- Shorter scenarios focus on the bocage fighting, Cherbourg, and Operation Cobra alongside the full campaign.
- 03Three-Day Turns
- Each turn represents three days of operations during the campaign.
- 04Brigade Scale Units
- Land forces are represented mainly at brigade or divisional level, with smaller garrisons and local defenses also included.
- 05Weather And Supply
- Weather can restrict Allied air superiority, while supply affects campaign operations, especially for the Allies.
SGS Overlord compared to similar games
Men of War: Assault Squad also presents World War II strategy, but its description centers on commanding every unit through large-scale strategy combined with direct, hands-on combat. SGS Overlord instead models the Normandy campaign with three-day turns, brigade- and divisional-level land units, supply, weather, and multiple operational scenarios.
