StrategyIs Screeps: World worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- JavaScript programmers who want colony strategy governed by their own code
- Players who prefer persistent worlds where units continue acting during offline periods
- Developers who want to experiment with scripting languages in a multiplayer strategy game
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking direct control of individual units may hit a wall when actions must be defined through scripts.
- Players looking for fast-paced strategy may find the standard 2-to-5-second game-tick pace too slow.
- People without programming skills may struggle with writing and debugging the code that controls the colony.
- Players who want only a conventional single-player strategy campaign may not fit the persistent MMO structure.
Our take on Screeps: World
The bounce point comes when colony management requires writing and debugging JavaScript rather than issuing conventional real-time commands. Players expecting constant direct control will encounter a persistent simulation where programmed behavior continues during offline periods.
What is Screeps: World?
Screeps: World is an open-source MMO strategy sandbox where JavaScript code controls a colony in a persistent online world.
Units can harvest resources, build units, mine, trade, manufacture, transport goods, defend, and conquer territory. Their programmed behavior continues while the player is offline, while colonies from multiple players share the same real-time world. Scripts can be edited in the in-game editor or an external IDE. WebAssembly supports languages including C/C++, Rust, TypeScript, Go, C#, Kotlin, and Swift. The starter package includes a 20 CPU limit, with a Lifetime CPU unlock and an in-game CPU Unlock consumable available as other options.
