Our take on Rune Gate
The emphasis on card customization understates the broader structure: champion parties, weapon-specific decks, gear, augments, followers, and permanent rune unlocks all shape progression beyond individual cards.
What is Rune Gate?
Rune Gate is a roguelite deckbuilder where a bridge guard commander leads champions against enemies from a breached gate.
Elemental runes modify cards with attack, draw, energy, or debuff effects, while upgrades can add rune slots. Nearly 200 runes come from combat rewards, crafting, encounters, and merchants. The game has 18 champions, with three from each elemental type, and each weapon category uses a distinct deck. Runs also include gear, augments, and summonable followers whose cards can be customized with runes. Fame earned across realms can permanently unlock selected runes for future runs.
How Rune Gate plays

Rune Gate compared to similar games
Shogun Showdown also combines turn-based combat, deck building, upgrades, and roguelike progression, but its description centers on positioning, attack tiles, combos, and facing the Shogun. Rune Gate instead focuses on rune-based card modification, champion parties, elemental types, gear, followers, and permanent rune unlocks.
