Our take on Roots Devour
Cards function as pieces of a spreading root network rather than isolated tools. Exploration therefore becomes physical expansion, while encounters with humans replace straightforward quest resolution with control, interference, and divergent fates.
What is Roots Devour?
Control an ancient entity whose roots spread through a dark forest and beyond.
Roots Devour combines exploration with a card-connection system: cards form extensions and routes for expanding through swamps, frozen mountains, and human settlements. The game includes hundreds of cards for creating changing combinations, alongside resource management, deck-building, puzzles, and card collection. Four regions contain evolving threats. Encounters with humans allow observation, interference, manipulation, or control over their lives. Relationships with up to 7 key characters can reveal hidden stories and lead to multiple endings. The setting presents a Lovecraftian forest and frames the entity’s actions through a choice between slaughter and mercy.
