We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Adventure players who want optional objectives and freedom to explore
- Fans of forest mysteries involving an isolated research station
- Players seeking a dark setting with a hidden creature and independent world events
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players who need constant objectives may stop when they encounter the absence of compulsory tasks.
- Players who want a tightly guided pace may bounce off the ability to explore, wait, or do nothing while days pass.
- Players looking for a bright or populated setting may not fit the isolated forest and station premise.
Our take on Rooten
The bounce point arrives when the game removes the usual checklist of objectives. Players expecting a guided sequence may stall at the choice between exploring, seeking an exit, waiting, or doing nothing while the forest’s events continue independently.
What is Rooten?
Rooten is an adventure game set in woodland around a remote research station.
The player arrives alone, and the helicopter is not due back for at least several days. The forest can be explored, an escape can be attempted, or the player can do nothing; there are no required tasks, and days pass regardless of these choices. An unusual, nonhuman presence lurks among the trees and is aware of the player. Events unfold in the game world without requiring the player’s involvement. Exploring its many locations reveals information about the woodland and the research team’s disappearance. The game features a dark atmosphere and hand-drawn visuals combining 2D and 3D elements. Curiosity during exploration can be dangerous.
How Rooten plays
- 01Independent world events
- Days pass and events occur regardless of whether the player explores or remains inactive.
- 02Forest exploration
- Multiple locations can be visited while searching for a way out.
- 03Hidden creature
- An inhuman creature lurks among the tree roots and is aware of the player’s presence.
- 04Mixed visual styles
- Hand-drawn graphics combine two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements.
