RPGIs ROMBIE worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Action RPG players who want procedural exploration and modular robot combat
- Players interested in equipment and job progression who prefer a futuristic wasteland setting
- VR players looking for a game that can also be played outside virtual reality
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fixed, handcrafted world may find the procedurally generated open world less suited to that preference.
- Players who want a narrowly focused combat loop may find the mix of exploration, jobs, item progression, and story broader than they want.
- Players looking for a realistic investment simulator may not find the in-game CryptoCoins feature matches that purpose.
Our take on ROMBIE
The page emphasizes endless progression and a generated open world, but gives no concrete scale for either. The more specific details are the component-based combat, enemy use of dropped modules, and multiple story endings.
What is ROMBIE?
ROMBIE is a futuristic, open-world role-playing game focused on action, set amid a bleak floating wasteland.
Travel through a world generated on the fly using a jetpack, and battle robots with distinct combinations of powers. Weapons and abilities can be combined to customize the player. Combat allows damage to individual robot components; a lightsword can parry projectiles and slice through machines. Opponents may retrieve modules left behind in fights and put them to use.
Progress involves collecting items and taking on jobs, alongside a dialogue-driven narrative with multiple conclusions. Additional modes offer different challenges, and an in-game simulated investment feature uses CryptoCoins. Virtual reality is optional. Steam Cloud saves are available only on Windows, and the VR functions were tested on Windows.
How ROMBIE plays
- 01Modular combat
- Enemies can be damaged one component at a time, and their AI can collect and use dropped modules.
- 02Jetpack exploration
- The world is procedurally generated and can be explored using a jetpack.
- 03Stackable abilities
- Player customization combines weapons and abilities that can be stacked.
- 04Multiple endings
- The story unfolds through dialogue and offers more than one ending.
- 05VR support
- Virtual reality is optional, so the game can also be played without it.
