Our take on Retale
The retail framing suggests a work simulation, but the actual emphasis is on comic obstacles, customer confrontations, secrets, and item-based shift strategies. The manager’s approval provides the central pressure, while the store setting mainly organizes the game’s challenges.
What is Retale?
Retale is a retail-themed game about completing work shifts while managing time and resources.
Players restock shelves, respond to customer complaints, navigate the sales floor, and avoid the manager’s disapproval. The store contains secrets to find, and an airhorn is available as a tool. Assigned shift members provide reluctant assistance during work. At the Tech area, players can obtain useful items and customize their build with special abilities, including faster movement and a hypnotizer. Up to three items can be combined to create different strategies for each shift. Progress is framed around satisfying the manager, Terry, while trying to finish the day and earn Employee of the Month.
How Retale plays
- 01Shift management
- Players balance shelf restocking, customer complaints, movement around the store, and the manager’s expectations during each shift.
- 02Build customization
- Special abilities and up to three combined items allow different approaches to individual shifts.
- 03Store exploration
- The sales floor includes secrets for players to discover while completing their work.
- 04Customer encounters
- Complaints can be handled quickly, including through interactions involving thrown boxes.
